Themes to be considered:

  • the relationship between work and play as defined by various social groups at different times in the past.
  • how people have perceived and thought about leisure and sport in the past.
  • class, ethnic, religion, gender and regional views and actions upon leisure and sport.
  • how was sporting culture formed in the U.S.?
  • how did Americans who were not interested in sports keep themselves entertained?

    "Coney Island" and "amusement". Then click on the decade to limit your search.) Awesome primary sources.
  • SIRS Decades find American history information, pictures, old newspaper articles. Search by the decade you are researching.
  • Student Edition- Infotrac resource for finding reference, news, multimedia and primary source resources on all subjects.
  • U.S. History in Context provides access to over 4,000 historical (primary) documents, articles from more than 30 reference titles, and over 110 full-text journal covering themes, events, individuals and periods in U.S. history from pre-Colonial times to the present.
